'The Landlady' is a short horror story written by Roald Dahl. The story has won "Best Short Story Mystery" at the Edgar Awards in 1960. Which sentence below demonstrates incorrect subject-verb agreement?
Dafna11 [192]

Answer:

D. Every man, woman, and child have a right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Explanation:

A verb is one of the parts of speech in English language. Verbs can be defined as any word that describes an action, occurrence, or state of existence. Some examples of verb are dance, sing, walk, play, run, sit, etc.

In English language, a subject can be defined as the person, thing, idea or place that performs an action.

A subject-verb agreement refers to the situation in which there is an agreement between a subject and a verb in terms of number.

This ultimately implies that, if a subject is singular, its verb should also be singular and if the subject is plural, the verb must be plural.

Hence, the sentence that demonstrates an incorrect subject-verb agreement is;

Every man, woman, and child have a right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

When a compound subject such as man, woman and child are preceded by the adjective every, the verb must be singular. Therefore, the verb "have" used in the sentence should be "has" because "have" is a plural verb.

The sentence then becomes;

Every man, woman, and child has a right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

The crew, made of clowners and krumpers, have visited Italy, Hong Kong, and France.
aleksley [76]
The subject-verb agreement rule which is being broken in the sentence above is collective subjects functioning as a unit require singular verbs.
The collective subject the crew requires a singular verb, because it denotes a single unit. So, instead of using the verb have visited, it should have been has visited.
