1. Paul Laurence Dunbar’s “We Wear the Mask” and “Sympathy” are poems that resound with suffering. What causes the pain of the p

eople who wear the mask and the repeated injuries of the caged bird? Why do the people and the bird not change their situations? To whom do the sufferers appeal in their pain, and why? Use *-the poems to support your response.
Answer: In "We Wear the Mask," people suffer because life is painful and people hide their pain from the world. Dunbar writes the "clay is vile" beneath their feet, implying life on earth is hard and difficult. They do not change their situations because they cannot -- it is implied that to live is to suffer, they never tried to leave because this is all they know and they know if they leave there will be consequences. “We Wear the Mask” and “Sympathy” they have a fear of what’s coming next, the fear of being scared. In the poem these people appeal to Christ to save them. In "Sympathy," the bird suffers because it is caged. It sees the beauty of the world around it but it cannot participate in it. The bird cannot change its situation because it is literally imprisoned. The caged bird appeals in its pain to Heaven, hoping God will relive its suffering.
