Oxen were cheap compared to horses and mules, they also ate less, required less care, and could pull heavier loads. Despite being slower these traits made them more accessible and desirable for long-distance travel in a wagon train.

Oxens were more reliable and tougher than mules. They will eat poor grass. Oxen were very strong and could haul fully-loaded wagons up ravines or drag them out of mudholes. A large wagon needed at least three pairs of oxen to pull it.

I'm thinking chocolate since I'm pretty sure lots of people rationed sugar during WWII. I don't think they would have rationed weapons, automobiles or water. Hope that helps.
