Discribe one image that came to mind as you read whitmans work?
dimaraw [331]

The long line, written in free verse, is perhaps Whitman's poetry's most blatant stylistic element. Whitman nearly entirely rejects the accented syllabic verse metrical tradition in favour of the English Bible's prosody.

This most famous Whitman work was one of twelve original works published in the first edition of Leaves of Grass in 1855. Like most of his other poems, it was extensively revised and reached its final permutation in 1881. "Song of Myself" is a broad mix of biography, sermons and poetic meditations. The utterance is not as grave as "From Paumanok". Rather, Whitman uses symbols and shrewd commentary to solve important problems. "Song of Myself" consists of vignettes rather than lists. Whitman uses here a detailed and accurately drawn scene. It wasn't until the 1881 edition that the poem was given the title "Song of Myself." Formerly "Poetry of the American Walt Whitman", in the 1860, 1867 and 1871 editions it was simply "Walt Whitman". The change in the title of the poem indicates what Whitman was talking about in this piece. Poetry explores the potential for community between individuals, much as Walt Whitman fuses specific individuals with an abstract 'I'. Whitman, starting from the premise of "what you suppose", seeks to prove that he encompasses the universe and is indistinguishable from it.

Hence, the answer is the long line, written in free verse, is perhaps Whitman's poetry's most blatant stylistic element.
