During WWII The Soviets attacked the Nazi's from the east, while the USA attacked the Nazi's from the west.  After the War Russia refused to cede control back to Germany and kept the east part as one of their communist states. America gave the west side back to Germany, and installed a Democracy.

Shortly after midnight on this day in 1961, East German soldiers begin laying down barbed wire and bricks as a barrier between Soviet-controlled East Berlin and the democratic western section of the city.
