George Washington became president in 1789 when 69 members of Congress decided to vote him president.  He was a military General and at that time, would be a perfect president.  

The reason he became president was that: "George Washington, the commander of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, is unanimously elected the first president of the United States by all 69 presidential electors who cast their votes."

George Washington was unanimously appointed as President of the United States of America in 1789. He was at that time the most popular politician in the country, and the only one who was admired and supported by all the political currents of the young nation.

Washington had had an outstanding participation in the French and Indian War, but its popularity was obtained during the American Revolutionary War, where he commanded the Continental Army in its independence struggle. This popularity, added to his convictions and his ideals of a united and prosperous nation, made the Philadelphia Convention appoint him its President in 1787, and the Electoral College elected him unanimously as the first President of the United States in 1789.
