Flashback is a dominant feature in the movie version of Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men. The use of flashback opens the 1992 film. The image of the woman running in a red dress through a field, and then of the lynch mob that wants to capture George and Lennie influences the viewer.

The author intended to invoke the enviroment of war without speaking about soldiers. He uses onomatopeia and enphasis in certain words so that the speaker, whilst reading the poem, could also imagine the drums playing.
