What are some ways the Code of Hammurabi showed inequality?
lions [1.4K]

The Code of Hammurabi was used to stop or reduce the amount of crimes that happen in the city. Even though the laws were okay for them, there were some laws that showed inequality to the people. There were many laws in the Code of Hammurabi that showed inequality, but here is just a few to get things started. The laws in the Code of Hammurabi showed inequality because it showed a big advantage and disadvantages depending on what’s your superiority, gender, and they assume. Because of that, it was unfair towards certain people.

One way the Code of Hammurabi showed inequality to the people was by superiority. One of the laws says that if a man strikes the cheek of a man who is more superior than them, they’ll be beaten. This law is saying that, for example, if a slave hits his master, they will be beaten. However, if the master hits the slave, nothing happens to them. This law shows that the slave owners have more power than the slaves, and shows the brutality they can do to the slaves since they have a lot of power over them. This is showing superiority, the person that's more superior has the advantage. This is one way that the Code of Hammurabi shows inequality.

Another way the Code of Hammurabi showed inequality to the people was by gender. The law was a disadvantage to women. One of the laws says that if a wife disrespects her husband, she’ll be thrown into water. This law is saying that a woman will be punished if she humiliates her husba, mnd, but if the husband humiliates her, there’s nothing wrong with it since men had more power over women. This law affected women a lot, and this is one of the laws which showed that men had more power than women. This is another way the Code of Hammurabi showed inequality.

Another way the Code of Hammurabi showed inequality to the people was by unfairness. Another law states that if someone accuses someone of robbing them, but can’t find the person who robbed them, they will be punished. This law is saying that even though she was the one that got robbed, she will still be put to death if the robbers are not arrested. They were really brutal when it comes to people that don't have any proof when they try to pin someone that broke the law. This is the last way the Code of Hammurabi showed inequality.

The laws that are in the Code of Hammurabi showed inequality to the people of the society because the law gave an excruciating amount of advantage to the people that are more superior, people that are men, and the court system was unfair. These laws made a lot of sense back then for the people, but looking at it now, it was very wrong towards the people that lived with the Code of Hammurabi. There are many more ways that the Code of Hammurabi was showed inequality to the people, but these are just some of the ways the Code of Hammurabi showed inequality.
