"Here Captain! dear father!
Rus_ich [418]

Answer:

This is an excerpt from "O Captain! My Captain!", a poem written by Walt Whitman. In this poem, Whitman addresses the death of Abraham Lincoln. The speaker of the poem is a sailor who is talking to his captain. This is, clearly, a metaphor for Whitman's conversation with the late Lincoln. The captain represents the president, while the ship represents the United States of America. The sailor refers to 'captain' as his father, which demonstrates Whitman's respect for Lincoln. The trip mentioned in the poem represents the Civil war. Although the poet expresses his relief that the war is over, the tone of the poem is dark. At the beginning of the poem, Whitman writes that "our fearful trip is done" and "the prize we sought is won", but the mood is quickly changed with the line "You've fallen cold and dead" , which symbolizes Whitman's sadness and grief over Lincoln's death.

Read this excerpt from The Land, Part 2. Now, I don't know what possessed me in that moment to say the next thing I did. Maybe I
Arturiano [62]

Answer:

B. Character vs. self.

Explanation:

In the story "The Land" part 2 by Mildred D. Taylor, we see the character of Paul riding Ghost Wind. Paul is a mixed race of a white father and a black mother, but whose father made sure that he enjoys the same rights as that of his white brothers. Set in the post slavery era, the story revolves around the lives of Paul and his best friend Mitchell, who is the son of a worker at Paul's father's farm.

The given excerpt is from when Paul decided to let Mitchell ride his horse Ghost Wind, even though he was not supposed to ride it, considering he was the son of a worker. The decision of Paul in allowing his best friend to ride the horse is against their very upbringing, for workers have inferior rights. Mitchell, being the son of a worker, is supposed to be lower than Paul, his master's son. But foregoing all these, Paul decides to let him enjoy. The particular excerpt is a conflict of interest between Paul's character and his own self. He even states that he "don't know what possessed me in that moment to say the next thing I did". This shows the conflict he has within himself.
