Santa Anna changed his political stance from a federalist to a centralist government and began acting like a dictator.

Explanation:

Initially, the Texans thought that Santa Anna will give the settlers with a freedom to managed their own territory while still under his Jurisdiction. This was the reason why they initially gave their support to him.

But 1830s, Santa Anna changed his political stance. Rather than giving the settlers with freedom, he wanted to impose direct control over the resources in Texas territory.  This led to an event called The Texas Revolution in 1835. The Texans forcefully removed Santa Anna's influence in the state and gained independence.
