AGUDAS

We call agudas those words in which the last syllable is the tónica. They have the stress on the last syllable.

caracol
verdad
camión
instructor
corazón
pintor.

Words that are agudas carry a tilde (accent mark) when they end in -n, -s or a vowel.

comió
canción
café
balón
Tomás

** Words that are agudas and come from other languages like English, that end in – s but this one is preceded by a consonant, do not carry a tilde.

Also, words that are agudas and end in -y do not carry a tilde, as y is a consonant.

LLANAS

We call llanas those words in which the stress falls in the next to the last syllable.

lápiz
toro
come
carta
hábil.

Words that are llanas carry a tilde if they do not end in -n, -s or a vowel.

lápiz
cáliz
hábil

Words that are llanas also carry an accent mark or tilde when they end in -s preceded by another consonant.

bíceps
cómics

ESDRÚJULAS

These are words that carry the stress or the strength in the third syllable (we always count from the last syllable backwards).

teléfono
esdrújula
tarántula
espátula
cómpralas

Words that are esdrújulas always carry an accent mark. This makes it easy, doesn´t it?

mecánico
cántico
cántaro
esdrújula
brújula

These are words in which the stress falls in the fourth or higher syllables.

cómetelas
alfabéticamente
inútilmente
cómpraselas

There are some rules, but the pronunciation is also important.

If the word ends in a vowel, an “n”, or an “s”, stress the last-but-one syllable:

If the word ends in a consonant other than “n” or “s”, stress the last syllable: ...

If the word has an acute accent, ignore the above rules and stress the accented syllable:

Answer:

-Hace 3 horas que Ricardo espera. OR: Hace 3 horas que Ricardo está esperando.

-Hace 2 meses que visitaron a su abuela por última vez.

-Yo veía la televisión todos los días "cuando era chico".OR: Sí, yo veía la televisión todos los días "cuando era chico".

"cuando era chico" is optional, it´s just an aclaration, but it´s not really necessary (The affirmative answer in Spanish can be in a lot of different ways, mostly depending how you are seeing it, but these two forms are the ones they usually teach).

-Yo hablé con María. OR: Yo he hablado con María. (First one more casual, second one, more formal)

-Sí, yo hablé con María. OR: Sí, yo he hablado con María. (First one more casual, second one, more formal)

The word "Sí" (Yes) is used a lot to respond answers and the other sentences without that word are like you are telling that to someone just following a conversation or randomly, so I would use one the ones with the "Sí"

PD: I¨m from Argentina. (Spanish it´s my first language)
