Le lièvre s'est vanté autrefois de sa vitesse avant les autres animaux. "Je n'ai jamais été battu," a-il dit, "quand j'ai mis en avant toute ma vitesse. J'ai défié quiconque ici de courir aussi vite.
La tortue a dit tranquillement : "J'ai accepté ton défi."

Un cap est donc fixé et un début est donné. Le lièvre s'est presque aussitôt caché, mais s'est rapidement arrêté et, ayant cru que la tortue n' a jamais pu <em>(past conditionnel =</em><em> n'aurait jamais pu</em><em>) </em>le rattraper, il s'est couché sur le bord du chemin pour faire une sieste . La tortue ne s'est jamais arrêtée un seul instant, mais a continué à un rythme lent mais régulier jusqu'à la fin du parcours.
Quand le lièvre s'est réveillé de sa sieste, il a vu la tortue juste à côté du poteau gagnant. Le lièvre a couru aussi vite qu'il a pu, mais ça a été trop tard. Il a vu que la tortue a atteint <em>(plus que parfait... </em><em>"</em><em>passé composé = </em><em>avait atteint)</em><em> </em>son but. Puis la tortue a dit :" Lent et régulier a gagné la course.'
