The United States does get called the nation of immigrants because almost all people living here in the United States there ancestors were not originally born in the state. Nowadays the United States is more in the middle of being pro-immigrants and anti-immigrants it's in the grey area. The main reason why I am saying that it is in the grey area is because the United States welcomes people who immigrate here but they want the people to immigrate through the legal system so they can be United State citizens.  

The United States has been called a lot of names but one name that it was called was the melting pot. The reason that people called The United States the melting pot is because people from all different places came to The United States so they could live the American  dream of being free and being able to voice your opinions because most people who came to The United States wanted to get away from countries that were run by Dictators. When the immigrants started coming to America they decided to open up Ellis island in 1924 so that the immigrants can start the process to be a United States citizen. Most places in America got a nickname called the “Salad Bowl”. It's a metaphor for the way a multicultural society can integrate different cultures while maintaining their separate identities, contrasting with a melting pot.

One of the reason why people might be saying that The United States is anti-immigrants is because of the Anti-German sentiment during World War I or because America wants to strengthen their borders but in all reality America is pro-immigration

  While it is true that there have always been people, and political forces that have opposed immigration to America, this has not prevented millions of people from immigrating to America at different times during history.

  In the eighteen and early twentieth centuries, millions of Europeans immigrated to America, mainly from Germany, Italy, Ireland, and Poland. They arrived in the ports of eastern cities like New York and Philadephia, and from there, settled all over the American Territory.

   In the second half of the twentieth century, millions of people from Latin America also immigrated to the U.S., mainly from Mexico and Cuba.
