Democracy is a form of government characterized by the participation of citizens in politics, the separation and balance of powers, the rule of law and respect for human and civil rights. The people exercise power through consensus, direct referendums or people-elected representatives.
Critics of democracy have argued that not all members of society are equally competent to make important decisions in society, and that some members of society have significantly more resources to promote their views and interests, so apparent democracy can essentially be transformed into a flawed one.
