In "To Build a Fire" (131), the protagonist (main character) has no name. He is referred to as "the man." Why do you think Jack

Since there is no other human character in "To Build A Fire", Jack London had no need to give his protagonist a name.

Explanation:

London must have had additional reasons for not providing him with a name. One reason could have been that he wanted to illustrate the insignificance of human beings in contrast to the grandeur and power of nature.

The theme of this short fable is to always be prepared. In the tale, the Grasshopper asks for help but the ants won't help because they know he should have prepared for winter instead of singing all summer. Being prepared is what the story is about especially when the ants tell the Grasshopper to 'spend the winter dancing' instead of helping him.
