Notwithstanding the festivals ashore and the effective voyage, the speaker uncovers that his Captain's dead body is lying on the deck. In the second stanza, the speaker entreats the Captain to "rise up and hear the bells," wishing the dead man could observer the rapture. Everybody venerated the commander, and the speaker concedes that his passing feels like an appalling dream. In the last stanza, the speaker compares his sentiments of grieving and pride.
