In his first inaugural address, March 4, 1933 President Roosevelt said: “This great Nation will endure as it has endured, will revive and will prosper. So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself…”

Roosevelt conveyed a message of hope to the American citizens; after the Great Crash, the ailing economy and the failing financial markets had brought the USA to a desperate situation. Roosevelt promised a “New Deal” to the American people, consisting on legal and financial reforms which led to economic recovery.

Both show how the common good is always above an individual good. The common good is "common" because it protects the interests of the majority of people, while not jeopardizing any individuals. That's why there are democratic elections, where everybody has the right to vote, but the majority decides who is going to represent them. It's not that the individual's opinion doesn't count or doesn't matter; on the contrary, it always counts. But at the end, it's about the assessment of all members of a group.
