Instead they were tourist staying at a beach resort. They thought that they were waving at fishermen not lost men in need of help.

Baldwin not only describes how white people hate black people, but also shows why black people carry the same act. At one point in his book, he writes: “I imagine that one of the reasons people cling to their hates so stubbornly is because they sense, once hate is gone, that they will be forced to deal with pain.” It is the representation of a post-hate state: the hate is gone, but the process continues - the person suffers the consequences of his acts after realizing what he has done.
