An octave consists of eight lines of verse, which are usually iambic pentameter in English and hendecasyllables in Italian. The octave is the first section of a Petrarchan sonnet, which is then followed by a sestet (six lines). The Petrarchan sonnet is a type of poem that was popular throughout the Renaissance, and was extensively used by the Italian poet Petrarch.
