Africans were the immigrants to the British New World that had no choice in their destinations or destinies. The first African Americans that arrived in Jamestown in 1619 on a Dutch trading ship were not slaves, nor were they free. They served time as indentured servants until their obligations were complete.

the poem by Whitley is significant because of the two reasons:

Whitley uses a narrative unfamiliar to many of her peer slaves of the time to deliver her message in her eight stanza poem. She appears calm,composed and appreciative of conversion to christianity, while using its fundamental believes and ethics to counteract the issue of black hatred that had permeated good white christians.
