The turtle eggs made Brian even more hungry, and it made him crave more food. When it says "awakened it" , this means that his hunger had been unleashed (and is also a form of personification).
The first quote suggests that writing makes us smarter, whilst the other suggests that writing does the exact opposite. This would be contrasting the two. Comparing the two would be that the two quotes are both about writing.
