THE BLUE-EYED, BROWN-EYED EXERCISE by CommonLit Staff

English

Answer:

1. Jane Elliot separated the group of blue eyed students from the brown eye students.

"On that first day of the exercise, she designated the blue-eyed children as the superior group. Elliott provided brown fabric collars and asked the blue-eyed students to wrap them around the necks of their brown-eyed peers as a method to easily identify the minority group"

2. She gave the blue eyed children extra privileges.

"She gave the blue-eyed children extra privileges, such as second helpings at lunch, access to the new jungle gym, and five extra minutes at recess. The blue-eyed children sat in the front of the classroom, and the brown-eyed children were sent to sit in the back rows"

3. She highlighted negative aspects of brown eyed children.

"She often exemplified the differences between the two groups by singling out students and would use negative aspects of brown-eyed children to emphasize a point"

Explanation:

From the the above elements Jane Elliot used to demonstrate the experiences of African Americans during the Civil Rights Movement, they are all similar experiences the blacks faced during that era.

1. There was heavy segregation: the blacks were not allowed to go to the same schools with whites, they were not allowed to enter the same bus, they lived in a different part of town from whites.

2. The whites had extra privileges, they were allowed to vote, they were allowed to become pilots while the blacks had no access to this.

3. The whites would magnify the negative aspects of blacks in the society and using the wrongdoings of a minority to judge how all blacks behave.

Use the following definitions to answer the question. evade: 1. (verb) to cleverly escape somebody or something, to avoid invade
irina1246 [14]

The sentence that contains the correct word usage of evade versus invade is "Corn leaf aphids invaded the crop and caused damage to the plants." If we replace the word invaded with its definition we can see why. The sentence would read, "Corn leaf aphids entered the crop and caused damage to the plant. This makes sense. A corn leaf aphid is a pest, so it would not make sense if they evaded or left the plant and caused damage. That would be a good thing.

You can use the same technique to see why the other three sentences use the incorrect word.

The thieves were able to invade being arrested by the police.

This would read, "The thieves were able to enter being arrested by the police. This does not make sense. Rather, it should read, "The thieves were able to evade being arrested by the police." Thus, meaning they were able to cleverly escape being arrested.

Guerrilla forces evaded the capital city and announced their power.

This would read, "Guerrilla forces cleverly escaped the capital city and announced their power." While this sentence could make sense in the right context, it is more likely that they forcefully entered the capital city, or invaded it, in order to announce their power.

Sheila tried to evade the private party by bribing the security guard.

This would read, "Sheila tried to cleverly escape the private party by bribing the security guard." Again, this could make sense in the right context, but it is most likely that she bribed the security guard in order to enter a party that she wanted to intend. Therefore, the use of "invade" makes more sense.

CAN SOMONE PLEASE HELP ME I NEVER ASK QUESTIONS ILL GIVE U ANYTHING
Sophie [7]
I can't help you with the answer as I haven't read the book. I can help you get to your own answer, though.

For question 5, think about how the book ended. What do you think will happen to the main character now? Think of the resolution as the "happy ending" where the big problem or conflict is solved. Include the quotations and parts of the book that helped you figure out what is going to happen to the main character.

Question 7 is asking you about the book's theme. Basically, it's asking what the moral or lesson of the story is. Does the story teach you about anything?
