How was the forming of the Klu Klux Klan related to Reconstruction

During reconstruction there was the idea of equality and allowing former slaves the right to vote, marrying and other basic rights. The white racists that up until recently owned slaves were terrified of what giving rights to former slaves would mean. So white supremacists used this fear as fuel to lead aggression against black Americans. A reference of this is a very racist film named Birth of a Nation.
