It  was the richest city in Europe during the 16th century for many foreign merchants lived here in the so called "Age of Exploration".

The city grew to become the center where hundres of ships came bringing goods from distant lands. Portuguese ships also loaded and laded commodity goods.

The banking system established providing trust for merchants to foster further economical activity. The banking was made available to all peoples from all lands.

<em>Antwerp became a cosmopolitan center where aristocrats and bankers lived in conditions that were favorable to their activities and attracted a wave of migrants.</em>

Many of the people who supported these ideas relied on the fact that later when they voted those people who got their voting rights because of the aristocracy would support them and they would gain political power because of new voters. This was a common strategy and is still used widely today because new voters can easily be influenced.
