The cane he walked with because of his rheumatism was nowhere to be found. There was Mrs. Lou, who preferred us to call her Betty. She was wearing a beautiful plaid pinafore with a black long-sleeved shirt underneath. Shiny, square spectacles graced her freckly, heart-shaped face. And finally, Fred Chambers, the little 6th grader who won the State Championship Spelling Bee for us. In the mural, he is in a tiny corner with a pencil.
