Difference between academic writing and other types of writing

In academic writing you avoid using contractions ,for example can't ,wont; instead you use can  not, will not.

The use of modal verbs in a formal way must be observed, example instead of "might" you can use "can"

In academic writing avoid using first person, example "I will"

Avoid use of slang and casual language. In Academic writting use of casual words and slang has been prohibited.

Which words in these sentences are used as puns? 1. An English teacher is like a judge in that she hands out long sentences. 2.
egoroff_w [7]
"Sentences" is the punning word in #1, for judges give out sentences. And teachers, as well. Get it? Sentences?
"Manor" is the punning word in #2. Get that? Castle? Home? Manor instead of manner? A pun is a joke exploiting the different possible meanings of a word or fact that there are words that sound alike but have different meanings.
Another example of a pun is:
The pigs were a squeal.
I wondered why the baseball was getting bigger. And then it hit me.

Do you understand now? LOL. (: Hope this helps(:
