1. Life- If you see fish in it, or moss, weeds, plants, etc. then that's a good sign of health.
2. Color- If the grass is green and the water is blue, it's a good chance of good health! 
3. Natural Resources- If you see deer and other critters drink it, on many occasions, it is probably healthy. 
4. Food- If you have caught a fish from there and the fish was healthy, that's always a good sign! 
5. Infections- If you can dip a cup in the water and drink out of it without getting ill, that means it's probably healthy because a dead animal in it can easily spread disease or infection! 
6. The Surface- If you see dead fish, or oily looking liquid, that a sign that the lake is UN-healthy. 
7. Kits- A water kit is a simple way to tell if the lake is healthy or not. 
8. Oxygen- Lakes will provide oxygen and many other natural resources. That is a healthy sign. 
9. Minerals- If nature-made minerals are found in the lake, then you should be almost positive the lake is healthy. 
10. Pureness- If the water is pure, it is healthy. 
11. Motion- If the water is active, or you see waves or mainly any motion is a good sign of health too!

The population was also increasing as the territory expanded. The Mexicans who are North Americans wanted to protect the territory from Russian domination.

For that reason, they encouraged the Anglo-Americans to move into California. So, this annexation of California was actually in the best long term interests of North America.
