1. Do you think the newsboys' story is one of triumph or loss? Why or why not?

History

I think it was a story of triumph.

In 1899, two of New York's largest papers, 'The New York World'  and 'The New York Journal' wanted to make more profits by increasing the amount that newsboys paid to buy their papers.

This meant that the newsboys would suffer huge losses which they could not afford as they were barely making enough to survive.

In response they:

  • held massive rallies and strikes
  • refused to sell any papers owned by the owners of the  'The New York World'  and 'The New York Journal'.
  • were sometimes violent in stopping the sales of the aforementioned papers.

The newspapers did not reduce their prices but they did agree to buy back any newspapers the boys could not sell.

It also inspired other strikes by newsboys across the country that led to improvements in the treatment of newsboys.

For these reasons, I concluded that the strike was a success.
