One reason the U.S. became who they are today is due to the Continental Convention. They were the ones who officially changed "United Colonies" [Original 13 colonies] , to "United States" once everything was together and they were out of British rule. This took place on September 9, 1776. Also, when the United States were official, the people elected General George Washington to be the very first President.
