In 1987, Sunni Williams got a commission to join United States Navy from the United States Naval Academy. In July 1989, she was designated a Naval Aviator and then had to report to Helicopter Combat Support Squadron 3 for initial H46, Seaknight, training. Immediately she completed the training, she was given an assignment to Helicopter Combat Support Squadron 8 in Norfolk, Virginia. She began making overseas deployments to the Red Sea, Mediterranean and the Persian Gulf in support of Desert Shield and Operation Provide Comfort. When Hurricane Andrew struck in 1992, she became the Officer-in-Charge of an H-46 detachment that was sent to Miami, Florida for the Hurricane Andrew Relief Operations onboard USS Sylvania. In 1993, Williams began a course in United States Naval Test Pilot School.
