The main benefit was general trading. The fact that made trading between them and opposite coasts easier, since they offer protection during the night to other ships.

The benefit of Greece having so many small islands was that if someone were to attack the mainland the islands would be safe until they were also target. The same could be said about the mainland... if the islands were targeted or destroyed the mainland would remain intact. A negative thing would be if you had news on a war or if you were being attacked they would not hear right away more like 1 hour to a day depending the relationship and closeness of the island.
