Remembering with difficulty why I had come, I went over to one of the stalls and examined porcelain vases and flowered tea-sets.

At the door of the stall a young lady was talking and laughing with two young gentlemen. I remarked their English accents and listened vaguely to their conversation. (“Araby” from Dubliners, p. 4) Based on this excerpt, why might he have difficulty remembering why he came?

Krakauer relates that Westerberg, then overseeing a barley harvest in Montana, picked up McCandless while he was hitchhiking. Westerberg remembers him as restless and handsome, with a sensitive face and a lean physique. He mentions that women would likely have found him attractive, but also describes his face as alternating between animated and slack. Alex was engaging and friendly.
