Answer:

____ reached the forest's entrance, panting.

"Finally, I can actually explore! I hate doing chores.. and I hate today in general," they muttered, turning their attention to the large trees in front of them.

___ started to walk, carefully observing each rock and pile of leaves for treasure, something to take back to their large house on the hill.

Something shiny flashed from the side, immediately catching ____'s eye.

They turned around and stared at the place where the light had come from.

Interesting. Looks like it was from that oak tree over there.

They walked to the base of the tree, studying it, and nestled in a nook was a large golden egg. It was about the size of their head.

"What the..."

___ carefully picked it up, amazed by what they had found.

They started to run, heading back out of the forest. Focusing all of their attention on the egg, being careful not to drop it, ___ tripped on a tree root and fell.

The egg flew into the air as they watched, helpless to stop it from falling and smashing onto the ground into two halves.

"NO!! MY EGG!!" They shouted, scrambling up to check the damage.

The egg had broken in half, true, but there was a much greater treasure inside.

They picked up the small slip of paper.

'Happy Birthday!! Just in case you'd thought I forgot. Great work with your chores!! -Dad'

That note sat atop a pile of chocolates and candy, all ____'s favorite.

They smiled for the first time in a while, gathering up all of it to take back.

Maybe today wasn't so bad.
