An action that sets a benchmark for similar situations is known as a precedent.

A precedent is:

  • an action that shows how things should be done in future regarding similar situations
  • a decision that future decisions based on a similar situation have to be based on

Precedent can be used in various fields but is largely used in the field of law where a Court ruling by a high ranking court states how things should be done in a similar situation from thence forth by setting a precedent.

In conclusion, precedents set in a situation act as benchmarks for appropriate action when a similar situation happens in future and is largely used in the field of law.
