Corina asked, "Jimmy, did you do your math homework yet? I'm having trouble with number 5."
Jimmy hesitated, not wanting to get in trouble for cheating, then replied, "Yeah. What did you get for number 5?"
Corina answered, "I got 12, but the back of the book says it's 7."
"How did you get 12? I had 7." Jimmy thought for a moment then said, "Wait, did you subtract 5 from both sides?"
Corina, embarrassed by the simple mistake, exclaimed, "Oops! No, I forgot to subtract it from the other side. Thanks!"
"No problem. Did you do your Spanish homework yet?" Jimmy asked.
When writing dialogue it's important to remember that all punctuation within the quotations is the same as anywhere else. Taglines are separated from the dialogue with a comma - but NOT a period. Also, for every "new" speaker, there should be a new paragraph. This shows the reader that the person speaking has changed.
