Crafts and professions had been controlled by the guilds in the biggest part of Europe during the Renaissance. As art was considered to be a craft at the time, it was also included.

Getting involved in the guild meant getting proper training and having access to commissions, but also settled the length of the contracts and how many students a master could train. </u>Guild rules allowed masters to sign as their own any art that left their workshop.
