In a direct democracy, power lay with individuals who needed to vote to:

  • put someone in power
  • enact legislation

Everyone who is eligible to vote gets to vote in a direct democracy. This can be quite complicated when the population of the society is high as it will present some logistical challenges.

It was with this in mind that the framers decided not to use direct democracy.

We can therefore conclude that, the framers did not want to use direct democracy as the American population was simply too large to support direct democracy.
