After the end of World War I European countries were in decline, their industrial and agricultural sectors suffered a reduction of more than 30%, causing a very strong impact on the economy and thus forcing these countries to look for loans and to import products from another country. In this context of poverty, European countries needed to buy many products and borrow money, in this moment, the United States of America enters as the nation that can meet European needs; at high interest rates, of course. The US had its territory spared during the war and had a large number of exports and loans of money to Europe, causing its economy to be boosted and its national income doubled.
Hardin wrote to Eleanor Roosevelt to share her bitterness against the
government programs who give out financial support to unemployed
people.
She thinks that these government programs, instead of
helping people get back on their feet to look for work, are enabling
people to laze about and wait for government hand-outs without exerting
effort to better their lives.
She beliefs that it is very unfair
for people like her to work very hard for her living and see those who
are able to work but chose not to relying completely on government
assistance.
The way in which state governments restricted the vote of African Americans after the American Revolution was through the imposition of discriminatory clauses such as poll taxes, by means of which it was impossible to grant people with fewer resources; literacy tests, by means of which only people with a certain level of education (who were generally only white) could vote; and the demands that the ancestors of the voter be free, which meant that the vast majority of African Americans could not meet this requirement.
These requirements were clearly unjust, discriminatory and unconstitutional, since they violated the freedoms of these people and their right to equality, which in turn are part of the very essence of the United States as a nation.
