Continuities: Blacks continued to work on plantation lands doing much the same work as before 1865. They were segregated from whites and often were not given the right to vote.
Why it was almost impossible for one party to win a majority because the candidate(s) were represented by north or south. Most south obviously didn’t vote for the north and vice Versa.
