The Espionage Act affected US elections un that it affected candidates of the Presidential election because were charged with offenses under the act. That was the case of Eugene V. Debs.  

The Espionage Act was passed on June 15, 1917. The law prohibits any kind of interference with military actions during wartime to prevent enemies to attack the US or infiltrate in US institutions. Even freedom speech was limited under the act in times of war.

Labor leader and activist Eugene V. Debs ran for president in 1920, while staying in jail in Atlanta Federal Penitentiary. He lost with only 920,000 votes.
