Top-down processing means the use of personal general knowledge and experiences to understand and interpret sensory perceptions.

Basically, using our senses to perceive incoming information may not enough for understanding, but with use of our prior knowledge and experiences, the meaning of the incoming information will be well-understood and comprehended. This is made possible by Top-down processing.
