1. To sell a product. When you write to an editor its usually commenting on something you read. You COULD try to sell a product to them, but why? lol

2. Background Information. You don't necessarily have to understand the humor, but understanding the concepts is vital to understanding the cartoon. IF you don't know what the cartoon is about how can you understand it?
