Momma is a powerful, proud person who is not easily frightened. She directs Mrs. Flowers as an equal, even though Mrs. Flowers is clearly more knowledgeable and taught than she is. Sometimes Momma lacks an awareness of the feelings of those around her. Even though she clearly loves Marguerite and has connected with Mrs. Flowers to help Marguerite speak again, Momma is not informed that Marguerite is ashamed and Mrs. Flowers is annoying when she makes Marguerite take her dress off.
