6. Application Activity
natima [27]

The prompt wants to analyze your writing ability and for that reason, the paragraph must be written by you. I'll show you how to write this.

Steps to write the paragraph

 • Introduce the fiction book or movie you are interested in.
 • Provide a summary of how the story of this book or movie is established.
 • Introduce the characters most relevant to you.
 • State why you like this book or movie so much.

You can choose any movie or book you like, as you will have to reveal your thoughts about that book or movie to convince the reader how good this story is and how it manages to entertain you profoundly.

An example of how you might write this paragraph is shown below.

A movie I like a lot is called "State Fair." This film was released in 1945 and tells the story of a girl who falls in love with a man who was kind to her at a state fair. The main character is called Margie, but the film focuses on her entire family and how they relate to the state fair. This movie is a musical and although I like the songs, what catches my attention the most is the rural environment and the cozy feeling it conveys. The film's photography is also fascinating, as are the costumes and locations that make the film very special.

Which statement most accurately compares epic poetry and lyric poetry?
Misha Larkins [42]

Answer:

A. Epic poetry consists of one general form, whereas lyric poetry includes several specific forms, such as the sonnet.

Explanation:

An epic poem is the type of poetry that narrates the heroic deeds of a character(s). It is typically written in honor or praise of the character(s) and can be as long as a whole book. It also involves the presence of supernatural beings such as gods and monsters etc. Most common and famous epic poems are Homer's "The Illiad", John Milton's "Paradise Lost" and Dante's "Divine Comedy" among others.

On the other hand, a lyric poem is where the verses are short and has a musical tone to it. They are different types of lyric poems, such as the sonnets and expresses personal emotions and feelings while also using the first person narrative voice. Examples of lyric poems are William Shakespeare's "Sonnets", "I Felt A Funeral In My Brain" by Emily Dickenson etc.

Thus, the correct answer is option A.

What quote from the text supports the meaning of Welkin?
Alex17521 [72]

Answer:We don’t use this much nowadays — dictionaries usually tag it as archaic or literary — except in the set phrase make the welkin ring, meaning to make a very loud sound.

What supposedly rings in this situation is the vault of heaven, the bowl of the sky, the firmament. In older cosmology this was thought to be one of a set of real crystal spheres that enclosed the Earth, to which the planets and stars were attached, so it would have been capable of ringing like a bell if you made enough noise.

The word comes from the Old English wolcen, a cloud, related to the Dutch wolk and German Wolke. Very early on, for example in the epic poem Beowulf of about the eighth century AD, the phrase under wolcen meant under the sky or under heaven (the bard used the plural, wolcnum, but it’s the same word). Ever since, it has had a strong literary or poetic connection.

It appears often in Shakespeare and also in Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales: “This day in mirth and revel to dispend, / Till on the welkin shone the starres bright”. In 1739, a book with the title Hymns and Sacred Poems introduced one for Christmas written by Charles Wesley that began: “Hark! how all the welkin rings, / Glory to the King of kings”. If that seems a little familiar, it is because 15 years later it reappeared as “Hark! the herald-angels sing / Glory to the new born king”.
