London, UK 2016

The quiet dripping disturbed the otherwise silent alley. Caroline stepped to the side to avoid tripping over a man on the street. She opened the door at the end of the street, and stepped inside.

"You're late!" A man's voice said as he stepped from the shadows.

"Sorry, I lost track of time."

"Well, you've got a new case, so I'd stop being late if I were you."He said.

"Jack, I'm never late when I'm on a case."

Jack sighed and handed her an envelope. Caroline opened it and read through it.

"Lucinda Waseford, dead in her parlor room. Let's see, she was found by her sister, stabbed in the back." She read.

"Yup, and you've been hired to investigate!" Jack said, "Now get to it, the sister is expecting you at 2 o'clock."

Turning the corner of Deals Gateway Av. Caroline looked up. Several historic buildings lined the street. 159 Deals Gateway Av. She walked up to a beautiful brick building, and rang the doorbell. A pretty blonde woman with a pleasant face opened the door.

"Oh...You must be the detective. Come on in." She said.

Caroline stepped through the white framed door, but as she stepped in, she noticed a small red mark on the frame.

"Wait a minute! What's this mark?"She cried.

She took a closer look and a similar mark on the hand rail next to the door.

Question 1:

Humorous passage 1: "It (the umbrella) was made to be carried on the arm like an enormous ornamental bat and to allow one the opportunity to put on British airs as the atmospheric conditions demanded."

Humorous passage 2: "(The umbrella is) An item to be carried in the street, to be used to startle friends and—in the worst of cases—to fend off one’s creditors."

Question 2:

Passage 1 is funny because it compares the umbrella to an ornamental bat, which sounds weird in the first place. Plus, the umbrellas is said to be used by people who want to seem British, which is even more outrageously funny.

Passage 2 is funny because it treats the umbrella as a scary object which can be used even to fend off people you owe money to, which is absurd.

In both passages, the author uses tone and voice in a very witty way: he speaks seriously about absurdity, about unimaginable stuff. It is like an encyclopedia of weird and fun facts. That is what makes it funny: the contrast between a serious tone and larger than life images.

Which of the following lines creates a natural pause by using an em dash correctly?
Ulleksa [173]
Hey there!

Em dashes are meant to indicate brief pauses within a running sentence. If you were to include one within a quote, it would go wherever a person pauses for an extended period of time (at least longer than the person would normally take to start their next word).

In your first answer choice, the reader is put under the impression that the em dashes used between "I", "uh", and "am" are pauses, as if Carla was at a brief loss for words. Since she likely paused and said "uh" while thinking of the next thing to say, this is the correct use of the em dash.

In your second answer choice, an em dash wouldn't be appropriate. It's not likely that Bianca would stop her sentence midway, pause, then tell Nawal to duck before the frisbee would hit his head. She likely stopped her sentence and immediately told him to duck instead.

In your third answer, this sentence doesn't even require a dash anywhere. There isn't a need for a pause between "shrieked" and "Laura".

In your fourth answer, this is also an incorrect use of an em dash. There wouldn't be a dash before "exclaimed" in this sentence.

Your answer will be your first option.

Hope this helped you out! :-)
