Since Walt is transitioning from being a shy person to volunteering in a local animal shelter, we can conclude that Walter is experiencing balance in the social dimension of his life.

The social dimension of life as it is being used here tells us that Walt is now better suited to relating with the society.

In the beginning of the question we read about his shyness. But by trying to volunteer, it is obvious that he is in need of companionship given that he is lonely.

He is therefore trying to balance his lonely weekend by volunteering.
