The origin of the research was at the Hawthorne works where structural changes were studied.

The structural changes were working hours, break time, focusing on worker’s need to improve the productivity of the company. It also focused on the novelty of the researcher and increased attention. The phenomenon is called the disruption effect. Hawthorne works was an electric factory which studied whether workers are more productive in higher or lower level of light.

The study showed that productivity was gained by the motivational effect of the workers. The other areas of study were to clean the working station, relocating workstations, cleaning of floors, etc.
