The first alternative is correct (A).

Russia was already a great territory when Peter the Great ascended to power. However, the country did not have easy access to the sea and Pedro wanted to change that. In 1700, he led a Russian war against Sweden, which controlled the Baltic Sea. This conflict became known as the Great Northern War. During the conflict, Peter built a new capital, St. Petersburg, on lands that had been taken from the Swedes. Russia ended up winning the war in 1721.

He modernized the country, importing western technology and ideas. He also turned it into European power, by defeating Sweden( a local superpower of that day) in the Great Northern War. Finally, he established royal authority over the church.
Other, minor reforms, included having the nobility shave their beards. Finally, and perhaps most famously,he built the city of Saint Petersburg, later Leningrad, now Saint Petersburg again.
On the negative side, he was a paranoid tyrant who solidified Czarist absolutism, but as Lenin later said, to make an omelette, one has to break a few eggs.

Where did the tradition of the arts and sciences come from?
Ilya [14]
The liberal arts (Latin: artes liberales) are those subjects or skills that in classical antiquity were considered essential for a free person (Latin: liberalis, "worthy of a free person")[1] to know in order to take an active part in civic life, something that (for Ancient Greece) included participating in public debate, defending oneself in court, serving on juries, and most importantly, military service. Grammar, logic, and rhetoric were the core liberal arts, while arithmetic, geometry, the theory of music, and astronomy also played a (somewhat lesser) part in education.[2]
Liberal arts education can refer to academic subjects such as literature, philosophy, mathematics, and social and physical sciences,[3] or it can also refer to overall studies in a liberal arts degree program. For example, Harvard University offers a Bachelor of Arts degree, which covers the social and natural sciences as well as the humanities. For both interpretations, the term generally refers to matters not relating to the professional, vocational, or technical curriculum.

When parking downhill in a car with a manual transmission you should park with the transmission in
Scorpion4ik [409]

When parking downhill in a car with a manual transmission you should park with the transmission in reverse gear. Because the engine will not want to turn over backwards, which is what will happen if the car starts to roll forwards. Remember also to turn the wheels towards the kerb (Road Code) and put your handbrake on (older style handbrakes have a tendency to slightly loosen after being pulled on).
