In order to understand the balance of power between the slave and free states, the original thirteen states are the proper starting point. States began moving toward the abolition of slavery during the American Revolution. For instance, by the mid-1780s five of the original thirteen states ( New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Rhode Island) had abolished slavery in their state.By the 1850s the United States had become a nation polarized by specific regional identities. The South held a pro-slavery identity that supported the expansion of slavery into western territories, while the North largely held abolitionist sentiments and opposed the institution’s westward expansion. Until the 1850s the nation precariously balanced the slavery issue.
