Giuseppe Verdi was an operatic composer who wrote about subjects that were passionate and interesting to the public and came to symbolize Italian Independence. He was a follower of the Risorgimento movement that wished to unify Italy. He was also a politician.
This technique is known as Impasto, layering paint thickly on the canvas making the strokes of the brush or knife visible. When dried the paint appears to be coming off the canvas creating a three dimensional effect.
